Admission Standards
Applicants must meet all admission requirements set by the University and
Department in order to be considered for admission. Please note that Botany
is being merged with Zoology,and new department will adopt a single admission standard.
University Admissions Standards
Admission standards at the University level are set by the Office
of Admissions. These standards are on page 18 of the Graduate
Catalog and include the following:
- At least a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
- A grade point average for the last two years of undergraduate work
of 3.0 (B) in a 4.0 scale or better.
- Competitive verbal and quantitative GRE scores.
- Submission of approved English language tests, such as TOEFL, with appropriate scores.
- Proof of proper Immunization
- On-going access to and competence with appropriate computer resources.
Departmental Admissions Standards
Admission standards for Botany MS and PhD programs are set
higher than at the University level. Admission is competitive. Please
read to the updated Graduate Handbook available in mid-October, 2008,
for further details.
- You must apply online before 15 December, 2008, and all
supportive mateirals should be arranged to be received by us in a
timely manner.
- Statement of Purpose serves as the Research Statement, and is one of the most important element in evaluating the qualification
- Sponsorship by a faculty member is a heavily weighted factor. It is
strongly encouraged to review faculty
research interests and contact faculty members before applying.
- Students should have coursework in botany or biology, genetics with
laboratory, mathematics through differential calculus, one year of
college physics, and chemistry through organic. Those admitted without
the appropriate coursework can make up the deficiencies by passing
appropriate courses early in their graduate programs. A reading knowledge
of a foreign language is desirable.
