Course Description and ObjectivesA survey of the major plant groups (divisions) with evolution serving as the basic underlying theme. Emphasis is given to the diversity of morphology (structure) that exists in the plant kingdom, although reproduction, anatomy and development, where applicable, are also stressed. Differences and similarities between the major plant groups and the importance of each group are noted. Living and preserved materials are utilized in the laboratory, and fied trips provide an introduction to these plants in their natural habitats. An appreciation and knowledge of all plants and the wide diversity of structure that exists in the plant kingdom. An understanding of the similarities and differences between major plant groups (e.g. algae vs. fungi; nonvascular vs. vascular plants; gymnosperms vs. angiosperms). An understanding of the evolutionary changes that have resulted in both simple and complex plants and, consequently, have produced the world's flora. An appreciation and knowledge of the importance and value of each major plant group to life on our planet. Lecture Topics
